Training in budo (martial arts) should be taken seriously. The dojo is not the only place of training; in order to make good progress all students need to train regularly on their own in addition to the official class times. Students are expected to take part in regular classes a minimum of twice a week unless their schedules do not allow for it, in which case they need to make up for it by training more on their own or at home. Training outside of the dojo does not necessarily have to be of a physical nature and should also include studying (reading and research) as well as contemplation on, and integration of the guiding fundamental concepts of budo.
- Students are required to follow the rules.
- Students should notify the instructor of any physical problems.
- Tuition is due on the first day of the month of training and should be paid by automatic payment or (if paid in cash) delivered to one of the instructors in an envelope with the student’s name and an explanation of the payment.
- Students should contact one of the Sensei if they are not able to attend class according to their own prearranged schedule.
- Students should always be on time; if you have to be late, sit on the side of the mat in seiza, bow to the shomen and wait until the instructor bows you into the class.
- Avoid eating or drinking within one hour before class.
- Never come to training while drunk or intoxicated.
- Show equal respect for upper as well as lower rank training partners.
- To show respect for our training space and for ourselves, the dojo should be cleaned before every class.
- Seniors (sempai) should take initiative to help lower ranks when they need help or guidance
- Juniors (kohai) should show all senior students respect and appreciation in return for the guidance they receive.
- Wash your Dogi (uniform) often.
- Students with long hair should keep their hair tied back or neatly braided.
- Students should keep their nails trimmed (to avoid injury) and feet clean.
- Leave mobile phones outside the dojo or turned off and in your bag when they must come in with you.
- Remove all jewelry (necklaces, rings, earrings, bracelets, etc.) before entering the dojo.
- Remove your shoes before stepping into the dojo or on to the matt.
- Bow when entering and leaving the training floor.
- Always bow to your partner before starting to work out with them.
- Once class has been bowed in, no one may enter or leave the mat without the permission of the teacher.
- All black belt instructors should be addressed by ‘sensei’.
- Keep talking to a minimum during class time.
- Direct questions and comments to instructors only at proper times during class.
- The dojo is a place of learning. In order to make good progression, techniques should also be trained at home.
- While in the dojo proper etiquette and mindfulness discourages a casual manner; it is not proper to yawn, lean on the wall, lean on your weapon, lie down or sit with your feet in front of you. At all times in the dojo students should strive to be as mindful and aware as possible.
- When visiting other dojo, always be respectful.
